What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are at a healthy weight. It is calculated as BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2.
BMI categories
- Below 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 — Healthy weight
- 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight
- 30.0 and above — Obese
BMI is a useful general guide but does not account for muscle mass, bone density or body composition. Athletes may have a high BMI while being very lean. Always consult a healthcare professional for personal advice.
